samsung health

Academic project, Dec 2023, individual

Background

As a daily user of Samsung Health, I find the step counter a valuable motivator for reaching my fitness goals. However, I realized the app doesn’t account for wheelchair users, who are also actively moving. This insight led to my HMW (How Might We) statement: "How might we redesign the Samsung Health app to better serve people who use wheelchairs?"

As a daily user of Samsung Health, I find the step counter a valuable motivator for reaching my fitness goals. However, I realized the app doesn’t account for wheelchair users, who are also actively moving. This insight led to my HMI (How Might I) statement: "How might I redesign the Samsung Health app to better serve people who use wheelchairs?"

Solution

I added the "Wheeling" feature—a dedicated page for wheelchair users. Since manual wheelchairs rely on arm movement, I designed the UI to track distance using RPM (Revolutions Per Minute). The page includes a daily progress chart with a set goal, displayed alongside the total distance covered. A comparison graph at the bottom allows users to measure their activity against others, encouraging motivation and engagement. This feature makes Samsung Health more inclusive by offering wheelchair users the same sense of accomplishment and support that step tracking provides for others.

Working on Adobe XD

The images on the left side are screenshots of the actual app, while the ones on the right are the ones I created in Adobe XD.

Final Design on Adobe XD

Working on Replit

I used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to make the new feature functional.

Prototype Video

This is a brief walkthrough of the prototype. I have added the 'Wheeling' feature right next to the 'Walking' feature.
