google doodle
Academic project, Dec 2023, individual
Background
In this project, I chose to create a Google Doodle with the theme of ‘Isaac Newton.’ Luckily, I couldn’t find any Google Doodles related to Newton, so I immediately started working on it. Although I didn’t feel particularly interested in this topic, my ideas of the design excited me. The cover of this PDF document is one of the covers I had prepared at the beginning of this semester, not knowing I would end up designing a Google Doodle–it was a remarkable coincidence. Additionally, I had seen someone using Spline on YouTube to create an interactive 3D website, and although I downloaded the app, I never attempted to try it. These coincidences motivated me to immerse myself even more in this project.
When you think of ‘Newton,’ the first thing that comes to mind is the ‘apple falling from the tree.’ So, I replaced the letter ‘L’ with the trunk of a tree and used a falling apple to replace one of the two letter ‘o’s. These two ideas can be considered metaphors, and the initial ‘Gogle’ with one missing ‘o’ for the first 2 seconds may create irony. The hidden charm lies in the apple–bringing the cursor close to it makes it grow. Placing the cursor on the tree makes it shake, as if inviting a click, and clicking produces the sound of a tree branch as it transitions to the next scene.
The second scene informs the player of what to do before starting the game. For users who click by mistake, I provided two options: yes and no. I added background music slightly different from the first scene, giving it an uplifting feel. Additionally, to add a whimsical touch, I included animations for the mouse cursor over ‘yes’ and ‘no,’ making ‘yes’ nod like agreeing and ‘no’ shake its head (personification).
The third scene is the actual game scene, designed to start after a slight pause to avoid overwhelming the player. Instead of displaying a message of failure, I created a restart button for the player to try again.
Word Cloud
My initial step was to focus on the word cloud, assembling notions for the subject of this project, and to ponder on what subcategories each theme might have. Eventually, I chose Isaac Newton since this was the topic which ignited my creativity the most.
Synopsis of the Theme
Isaac Newton was a British physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher born on January 4, 1643, in Woolsthorpe, England. His father, a rich farmer, unfortunately passed away just three months before Newton’s birth. His mother, influenced by this tragedy, remarried when he was three years old and left the household. Perhaps due to these influences, Newton was an introverted and solitary child who showed early talent in mathematics and science.
While attending Trinity College at Cambridge in 1661, Newton became fascinated with optics and began experiments on light and color. This later contributed significantly to optical research. He discovered that white light is composed of various colors and developed the first reflecting telescope using curved mirrors to reflect and magnify images. Additionally, he studied the properties of lenses and developed theories on color.
Furthermore, he played a crucial role in the development of calculus, which later became an essential tool in physics research. When a severe outbreak of the plague forced the closure of Cambridge in 1665, Newton reluctantly left and returned to his family farm in Woolsthorpe. Even during his stay there, he made remarkable advancements in mathematics and physics. It was during this period that he formulated the laws of motion, describing the motion and interaction of objects, and the law of universal gravitation, explaining how all objects in the universe attract each other.
Newton’s contributions revolutionized the understanding of the natural world and laid the foundation for classical mechanics and modern physics.

These were my initial ideas, but I decided to simplify them for a more engaging look.

I chose ‘Brasika’ for its lively and fresh feel, which complements the apple (Newton) theme well.
