Academic project, April 2024, individual

Background

In this project, the goal was to create a sign-in page with personality using an adjective. I started by making a list of 40 adjectives—20 positive and 20 negative. I chose 'cacophonous,' which refers to a mixture of noises, creating discord. Upon pondering the meaning of this word, the image of a trashcan immediately came to my mind. Within the trashcan, various useless items reside: empty shampoo bottles, tissues, strands of hair, corpses, or body parts, among other things. These items each have their own sounds. For example, even objects made of the same plastic produce different sounds when interacted with. However, once all these items are placed inside a trash bag, they lose their individual sounds, merging into a cacophony of clashing noises as they collide with one another.

To capture the irony of a trash bag silencing various sounds, I incorporated textures resembling a trash bag, text that screams as if welcoming the trash, and backgrounds featuring two types of paper textures to enhance the grungy, cacophonous atmosphere.

Sketches

I chose four adjectives out of 40—affectionate, ebullient, slothful, and cacophonous—and began by briefly sketching my ideas on paper. After gathering ideas for each adjective, I decided to go with 'cacophonous,' as it sparked the most ideas for me.

Photoshop Displacement Map Study

I tried using several free trash bag PNG images and ended up choosing the gray one. Instead of only applying a displacement map, I decided to distort the text further by using pinch, ripple, and shear tools.

Type Study

Since the text looked too calm to convey a sense of cacophony, I decided to experiment with the typography. These are some versions of my study. I aimed to make the text loud and diverse by using the 'perspective' tool.

I added 'welcome' text around the trash bag.
